Climbing
By Jennifer Haynes
two paths lie before me
one is paved and going downhill
the other is a rock face to climb
if I go downhill, I won’t risk getting hurt
but if I climb, there’s no telling what rocks I’ll jar loose
at the bottom of the paved road lies a bubbling pit
filled with black tar
to take this road I will sink in the ooze
just as the Titanic sank beneath a glacier
but the world will keep turning,
indifferent to my suffering,
with one less body walking upon it
the other path is one I tried to take before
only to fall down again and head for the pit instead
the scars from my previous attempt are reopened
and the pain is felt as strongly as ever
despite knowing that there will be another cliff
I know that it’s the right way to go
but I feel that this path requires more
strength than I possess
I am a weak person, unable to hold on for long
will I reach the top?
only time will tell
